Reflections From an Imperfect Baker

Not Surprisingly, I Wasn’t Perfect When I Started Baking.

This was one of the first cakes I ever made! It was my sisters birthday and we wanted to have a backyard brunch! I wanted something full of flavor, and simple enough to create, but also something lovely to add to a brunch spread! So I decided to try this naked lemon cake with lemon frosting and mixed berry filling! By no means did this come out perfectly, in fact it was not as simple as I thought it would be. My lemon frosting was a bit runny, the cake seemed to lean to one side, I did not get the clean edges I wanted, and that one little blackberry kept leaning to the side because of the runny frosting. And yet, I still remember how wonderful it tasted! One of my favorite cake flavors to date!

Just Start!

I am about 4 years into my baking journey. Still learning a lot and still growing as a baker. And what I want to share, and something I have learned over the years as I continue to push forward is, to Just Start! Whatever it is that you are desiring or dreaming of, it does not need your perfection, it just needs your willingness to start. And yes it will be very humbling in the beginning. You’ll make mistakes and then make some more. You will reach moments close to perfection and then be humbled again. If this journey has taught me anything it’s that there can be no growth without pain. And your purpose, goal, dream, desire is on the other side of fear, anxiety, and worry.

Step Out In Faith

Most importantly, Starting requires faith. It requires a surrendering of control, embracing the little that you have, and daring to believe for more. I have been reflecting on the story of Moses and I keep hearing the words, “Stretch out your staff, Be Still, and let Me make a way.” I am inspired by the story of Moses because despite how impossible the odds were, He dared to believe. He stretched out his arm, planted his staff in the sea, and watched as God made a way. Stepping out in faith looks like being scared and doing it anyway. It looks like investing in yourself and believing that you already have everything that you need to get started! It looks like taking that first step and trusting that the Lord will fight for you, you only need to be still.

If you’ve made it this far, I believe that this encouragement was meant just for you! Whether you are on a baking journey like me or believing and going after other dreams and goals, be kind to yourself. Remember that you do not need to be perfect, you just need to show up and Start!
